A Walk in the City – Urban Inspirations

Professor Richard Dawkins spoke on the radio this week about the feelings of awe and wonder he gets from contemplating nature – its majesty and its mystery. Such feelings are  transcendental and spiritual and owe nothing to religion: they are just as available to atheists and secularists.

We agree, and would add that some of the works of the human race can also be majestic, beautiful, inspirational and uplifting. A short walk through St Pancras and Kings Cross this week proved to be a welcome break from the mundane and the routine.

The British Library was the starting point – a building that thousands of us pass by on the busy Euston Road every day, though rarely venturing inside to experience the exceptional spaces and the incredible books that are on permanent display.
